Programme:
Ludwig van Beethoven / Coriolanus, Op. 52, Overture
Franz Joseph Haydn / Symphony No. 80
Ludwig van Beethoven / Piano Concerto No. 5, Op. 73, ‘Emperor’
Viennese Classicism and its evolution are at the heart of the programme that Katharina Wincor conducts with the Orchestra della Toscana.
The concert opens with the overture Coriolanus, Op. 62 by Ludwig van Beethoven, an intense and dramatic work inspired by the tragedy by Heinrich Joseph von Collin. This is followed by Symphony No. 80 by Franz Joseph Haydn, a work rich in contrasts, irony and formal inventiveness. The variety of character highlights the freedom with which Haydn works with the forms of the classical symphony.
The second half features Federico Colli as soloist in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in C major, Op. 73, known as the ‘Emperor’, one of the composer’s most expansive and representative piano concertos.
