Program:
Johannes Brahms // Piano Concerto No. 1 Op. 15
Felix MendelssohnSymphony No. 5 op. 107 ‘Reformation

Two intense pages from the 19th century repertoire, both linked to the idea of spirituality, albeit in very different forms. Concerto No. 1 in D minor for piano and orchestra op. 15 is one of Johannes Brahms‘ most dramatic early works, the result of a long, tormented gestation: born as a possible symphony, it became a concerto only after numerous revisions. The orchestra here does not accompany, but participates: it dialogues with the piano, challenges it, consoles it.

The result is music that looks to Ludwig van Beethoven, but with an already highly personal voice. The solo part is entrusted to Marie-Ange Nguci, a French-Albanian pianist, born in 1998, known for her surprising maturity and powerful musical gesture.

On the podium is Hossein Pishkar, Iranian conductor and winner of the Deutscher Dirigentenpreis, active in Germany and Europe with a repertoire that favours depth and structure. Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 in D minor op. 107 “Reformation”, a tribute to Protestantism and Luther’s chorale Ein feste Burg, closes the concert. A symphony designed to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession, it combines tension, transparency and liturgical solemnity.
