Carnival Concert
THE BIG APPLE
Broadway & The Musical
***
Orchestra della Toscana
Marco Pierobon conductor and trumpet
The Carnival Concert of the Orchestra della Toscana, conducted by Marco Pierobon – also trumpet soloist – is a tribute to the city that more than any other has marked the musical imagination of the 20th century: New York. A journey between cinema, jazz and musical theatre that pays tribute to three giants of composition: Ennio Morricone, John Kander and George Gershwin.
New York is dream and ambition, rhythm and modernity, and in this evening its essence comes to life through arrangements that enhance its unique character. The boundless ocean and the promise of a new life resonate in Morricone’s notes for The Legend of the Pianist on the Ocean, where a cry rips through the silence and the piano creeps in like a wave carrying destiny. Then the twinkling lights of Broadway turn on with Kander, author of seductive melodies full of irony, capable of transforming each song into a little show within the show: from the magnetism of All That Jazz to the mocking energy of Cell Block Tango, passing through the sarcasm and theatricality of We Both Reached for the Gun. Finally, New York becomes a symphony with Gershwin, where swing meets the orchestra and jazz merges with cultured music: from Fascinatin’ Rhythm to the Concerto in F, up to the overwhelming emotion of the pages of Porgy and Bess, with its mixture of blues, gospel and timeless lyricism. A concert that tells of the city that never sleeps, with its music made up of light and shadow, euphoria and melancholy.
A celebration of the myth of Broadway and the musical, the beating heart of the Big Apple, where every note is a story and every melody a journey through time and space.
