Program:
Robert Schumann / The Overture, Scherzo and Finale, No. 52
Carl Maria von Weber / Clarinet Concerto No. 2 Op. 74
Franz Schubert/ Ouverture in stile italiano, D 590
Felix Mendelssohn /Symphony No. 4 Op. 90 ‘Italiana’
Italian atmospheres, classical brilliance and romantic virtuosity: the concert conducted by Diego Ceretta, principal conductor of the ORT, brings four 19th century composers into dialogue in a play of reflections between northern and southern Europe. The opening is Robert Schumann‘s Overture, Scherzo and Finale op. 52, a lively score built with symphonic momentum, where each movement has its own personality but acts as part of an organic whole.
At the centre of the programme is the Concerto No. 2 in E-flat major for clarinet and orchestra op. 74 by Carl Maria von Weber, a perfect example of German instrumental romanticism: theatrical, brilliant, full of melodic flourishes and acrobatic passages. It is played by Kevin Spagnolo, an established clarinettist on the international scene, winner of the Geneva competition and appreciated for his fluid technique and enthralling musicality.
The programm is completed by Franz Schubert’s Italian-style Overture, a sparkling page created as a tribute to opera buffa, and Felix Mendelssohn‘s “Italian” Symphony, written after his famous trip to Italy: sunny, agile, full of rhythm and colour.
